प्रधानमंत्री जन धन योजना 2026: ज़ीरो बैलेंस खाता और लाभ

Quick facts: Zero-balance savings account at any bank · RuPay debit card free · ₹1 lakh accident insurance + ₹30,000 life insurance · overdraft up to ₹10,000 after 6 months · over 53 crore accounts nationwide · scheme portal pmjdy.gov.in.

Launched on 28 August 2014, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is the world’s largest financial-inclusion programme. It exists for one reason: every Indian adult should have access to a bank account, no matter how poor. No minimum balance, no complex paperwork, and a free debit card that works at any ATM. As of 2026, over 53 crore Jan Dhan accounts are active, with more than ₹2.5 lakh crore in deposits — serving mostly women, rural workers, students, and first-time bank customers.

PMJDY में क्या-क्या मिलता है — Complete Benefits

Benefit Details
Zero-balance savings account No minimum balance requirement
RuPay debit card Free, works at all ATMs and POS
Accident insurance ₹1 lakh (₹2 lakh for accounts opened after Aug 2018) — via PMSBY
Life insurance ₹30,000 for accounts opened between 15 Aug 2014 and 31 Jan 2015 (legacy)
Overdraft (OD) Up to ₹10,000 after 6 months of satisfactory operation
Aadhaar-linked DBT All central govt benefits (PMAY, PM-KISAN, LPG subsidy, etc.) can flow into this account
Mobile banking Free via USSD / *99# / bank’s app
Chequebook Available on request (small charges may apply)

The ₹10,000 overdraft facility is the most under-used benefit — many account holders never know about it. It’s effectively a small emergency credit line without collateral or guarantor.

पात्रता — Who Can Open a PMJDY Account

  • Any Indian citizen aged 10 or above
  • Single or joint account allowed
  • No minimum balance requirement
  • No income cap — rich or poor, all eligible
  • Existing regular savings account holders can also convert to PMJDY by linking Aadhaar + RuPay card
  • Minors (age 10+): can open with self-operated basic banking facilities

You don’t qualify for OD facility if

  • Account is under 6 months old
  • Transaction history shows anomalies (bounced cheques, suspected money-mule use)
  • CIBIL score is very poor (few banks enforce minimum)

आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ — Documents Required

For most applicants — just your Aadhaar is enough (as of 2026 simplified KYC):

  • Aadhaar card
  • One passport-size photograph
  • Aadhaar-linked mobile number (for OTP)

Alternative KYC (if no Aadhaar)

  • Voter ID + NREGA job card OR
  • Passport + driving license OR
  • Any two of: PAN, Voter ID, DL, Passport, Job Card

For minors

  • Birth certificate + parent’s KYC

खाता कैसे खोलें — How to Open the Account

Option 1: In-branch (most common)

  1. Visit any PSU, RRB, private bank, or cooperative bank
  2. Ask for “Jan Dhan Yojana Account Opening Form” (PMJDY Form)
  3. Attach Aadhaar + photo
  4. Submit → account opens same day or within 3 working days
  5. RuPay debit card delivered to your registered address in 10-15 days

Option 2: Through Bank Mitra / Business Correspondent

Bank Mitra (also called Business Correspondents) set up in remote villages can open Jan Dhan accounts on-site. They carry micro-ATM devices and biometric scanners.

  1. Find your nearest Bank Mitra — ask at your Gram Panchayat
  2. Open account with biometric KYC (fingerprint/iris)
  3. Get instant account number
  4. RuPay card posted to your address

Option 3: Online (existing bank customers)

If you have a regular savings account at HDFC, ICICI, SBI, or PNB, you can often convert / open an additional PMJDY account through the bank’s net banking:

  1. Log in to net banking or mobile app
  2. Navigate to “Open New Account” → select “Jan Dhan”
  3. Provide Aadhaar OTP
  4. Account opens — free RuPay card shipped

ज़ीरो बैलेंस और OD कैसे काम करता है — Zero Balance and Overdraft

Zero balance — no fees

Most regular savings accounts levy charges if your balance drops below ₹1,000-10,000. PMJDY has no such minimum. You can keep ₹0 for months and no charges are deducted. Free debit card + free transactions + free SMS alerts.

Overdraft ₹10,000 — how to access

  1. Account must be 6+ months old with regular transactions
  2. Aadhaar-linked and OD-eligible (bank checks this during annual KYC)
  3. Approach your branch → request “OD under PMJDY”
  4. Bank reviews activity → approves up to ₹10,000
  5. You can withdraw the ₹10,000 as a demand loan — repay within 36 months
  6. Interest rate: bank’s standard (usually 12-15% p.a.) — low for the benefit vs what MFIs charge

When it helps: medical emergency, stock-replenishing for small shop, travel for govt scheme application. Not a substitute for regular credit.

PMSBY + PMJJBY — Optional Add-ons

Every PMJDY holder can enrol into two micro-insurance schemes via the same account with one-click:

  • PMSBY: ₹20/year premium → ₹2 lakh accidental death / ₹1 lakh partial disability cover
  • PMJJBY: ₹436/year premium → ₹2 lakh life insurance (natural or accidental death)

Total for both: ₹456/year for ₹4 lakh combined cover. Enrol at your branch or via net banking — usually a 2-click process.

Digital + Mobile Banking

  • RuPay debit card works at all ATMs (up to 5 free transactions/month at non-home ATMs)
  • USSD *99# for mobile banking without internet: balance check, mini-statement, transfer up to ₹5,000/day
  • Mobile app of your bank works like any regular app
  • UPI payments supported — link your PMJDY account on GPay / PhonePe / Paytm

अगर खाता निष्क्रिय हो — If Account Becomes Inactive

  • No transaction for 12 months → account marked inactive
  • Reactivate by visiting branch with Aadhaar + fresh KYC
  • Reactivation fee: ₹0 for PMJDY (unlike regular accounts)

FAQ — Common Questions

I already have a regular savings account. Can I also open Jan Dhan? Yes — but banks typically allow only one savings account per customer at that bank. You can open PMJDY at a different bank, or convert your existing account to PMJDY (which waives minimum-balance penalties).

Can my wife/child/parent also get their own Jan Dhan account? Absolutely. PMJDY is individual — every family member above age 10 can have their own account. This is especially useful for government DBT schemes flowing directly to the right person.

Do I pay any fees if I don’t use the account? No. Zero-balance + zero-maintenance. However, the RuPay card may have a small replacement fee (~₹50) if lost.

Is the ₹2 lakh PMSBY insurance automatic with PMJDY? No — it’s optional. You must enrol separately (₹20/year premium). Visit your branch to enrol; coverage begins immediately.

Is OD guaranteed after 6 months? No — OD up to ₹10,000 is available after 6 months, but bank must verify regular transactions and KYC. Low-activity accounts may not get it.

Can I link DBT benefits to a regular account instead of PMJDY? Yes. PMJDY is one of many DBT-eligible account types. Any Aadhaar-linked savings account receives DBT. PMJDY is recommended only because it has no minimum-balance friction.
