प्रधानमंत्री उज्ज्वला योजना 2026: मुफ्त गैस कनेक्शन कैसे पाएं
Quick facts: Free LPG connection with zero deposit · includes stove + first refill (PMUY 2.0) · targeted at poor women without existing LPG · additional refill subsidy of ₹300–450 per 14.2 kg cylinder · apply at pmuy.gov.in · helpline 1800-266-6696.
Cooking on wood, coal, or kerosene stoves is a quiet killer — indoor air pollution causes nearly 5 lakh premature deaths in India every year, most of them women and children. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched in May 2016 and expanded as Ujjwala 2.0 in August 2021, has provided over 10 crore free LPG connections to women from poor households. If you don’t yet have an LPG connection at home and your family falls in any priority category, this is the scheme for you.
उज्ज्वला योजना क्या है — What’s Included
Under Ujjwala 2.0, every new connection comes with:
- ₹1,600 connection deposit waived — zero rupees at enrolment
- First LPG cylinder refill free (14.2 kg)
- Free hot-plate stove (single or double burner)
- Additional subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder (standard PMUY rate), increased to ₹450 in many months during elevated gas prices, subject to 12 refills per year cap
- Regulator + suraksha hose + pressure-test gauge — included
The connection is issued in the woman’s name — this is structural. Even if the household has a male earner, the LPG ID is tied to the woman of the house. That’s how the cash subsidy (PAHAL DBT) flows directly to her bank account.
पात्रता — Who Qualifies
Under Ujjwala 2.0, the eligibility criteria have been broadened:
Mandatory conditions
- Adult woman (18+) of a household
- No existing LPG connection in anyone’s name at the same address
- Indian citizen with valid Aadhaar
You qualify under at least one of these groups
- Scheduled Caste (SC) household
- Scheduled Tribe (ST) household
- Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) beneficiary
- Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card holder
- Forest dweller
- Resident of most-backward classes
- Tea-garden / ex-tea-garden tribes
- River-island / nai-stya / Morar / Nat residents
- BPL household (identified via state BPL list)
- Low-income household where combined monthly income is within ₹1.5 lakh (in most states, lower in some)
- Listed in SECC 2011 under deprivation criteria
Migrant worker sub-category (2.0 expansion): if you’ve moved to a new state for work and can’t present ration card / residence proof of the new area, a self-declaration is accepted for family details. This is specifically to help urban migrant workers.
आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ — Documents You’ll Need
- Aadhaar card (mandatory, must be Aadhaar-linked with active mobile)
- Aadhaar of the husband or other family members — for family structure verification
- Ration card or BPL certificate — if applying under BPL path
- Bank passbook in the woman’s name (for DBT subsidy)
- Self-declaration of family structure (format on pmuy.gov.in)
- Recent passport-size photo of the applicant
- KYC form of the oil marketing company you choose (IOCL / HPCL / BPCL — downloadable from their sites)
ऑनलाइन आवेदन — Apply Online
- Open https://pmuy.gov.in in your browser
- Click “Apply for New Ujjwala 2.0 Connection” on the homepage
- Choose your preferred gas company — Indane (IOCL), HP Gas (HPCL), or Bharatgas (BPCL). Choose the one with a distributor nearest to you.
- You’ll be taken to that company’s portal. Click “New Ujjwala 2.0 Connection”.
- Enter your Aadhaar number + mobile OTP for verification
- Fill in the KYC form: name, address, bank account, family members
- Upload your documents (Aadhaar scan, photo)
- Select your nearest distributor from the auto-populated list
- Submit. You’ll get an application reference number by SMS.
- Visit the distributor (usually within 7 days) with your physical Aadhaar and reference number to complete biometric verification and collect your cylinder + regulator + stove.
You can also apply directly at the distributor’s office — many rural families do this. Take all documents + your Aadhaar-linked mobile phone (for OTPs).
e-KYC Update — Biometric Required from Dec 2023
Since late 2023, all LPG consumers (PMUY + non-PMUY) must complete biometric e-KYC at the distributor. This is to eliminate duplicate connections and ensure subsidy reaches the right bank.
To update KYC: 1. Visit your distributor with your Aadhaar card 2. Place your thumb on their biometric scanner 3. Scanner confirms with UIDAI in real time 4. Your connection remains active; subsidy flow continues without interruption
If your biometric fails (callused fingers are a common issue), distributors can use Aadhaar-based OTP verification as fallback. If that also fails, use the face-authentication option via the Aadhaar FaceRD app.
If you don’t complete KYC by your distributor’s notified date, your LPG subsidy is suspended and you pay full market price until it’s completed.
सब्सिडी कैसे चेक करें — Check Your Subsidy Status

FAQ — Common Questions
I already have an LPG connection in my husband’s name. Can I apply for a new PMUY connection? No. One LPG connection per household is the rule. PMUY is specifically for households with no existing LPG connection at the address.
How long does it take to receive the connection after applying? Typically 7–15 days after the distributor receives your documents and biometric is verified. During state drives (often pre-Diwali), same-week issuance is common.
Do I need to return the cylinder and regulator if I don’t use the connection? Yes — if you surrender the connection, return the cylinder, regulator, and hose to the distributor. Otherwise the security deposit equivalent is deducted.
Is the refill subsidy automatic, or do I need to apply? Automatic — subsidy is transferred directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account via PAHAL DBT within 3–7 days of each refill.
What’s the difference between PMUY 1.0 and PMUY 2.0? PMUY 1.0 (2016-2020) covered 8 crore families with free connection but customer had to buy the stove + first refill. PMUY 2.0 (2021 onwards) also waives the deposit, includes free first refill and free stove, and has broader eligibility including migrant workers.
