Your Aadhaar is the single most important document in India in 2026 — it’s linked to your bank, PAN, ration card, SIM, mutual funds, LIC policies, every govt scheme you apply for, and hospital treatment under Ayushman. When something on your Aadhaar is wrong or outdated — a typo in your name, an old address, an inactive mobile — it ripples through every other system. Most updates are now doable online; a few require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK). This guide covers exactly what goes where.

What You Can Update Online

Demographic updates on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in:

• Name (including spelling corrections, marriage-driven changes)
• Address
• Date of Birth
• Gender
• Language preference

Fee: ₹50 per online update (payable via net banking / UPI / card)

What Requires a Visit to ASK (Offline Only)

• Photograph update
• Biometric update (fingerprint / iris)
• Mobile number update
• Email address update (UIDAI now allows this online too in 2026 — check)

Documents Accepted (UIDAI’s Approved List)

UIDAI publishes a strict list of accepted documents. Use only these:

Proof of Identity (POI)

• PAN card
• Passport
• Voter ID / EPIC
• Driving license
• Govt photo ID (state/central employee)
• Bank passbook / credit card / cheque (with photo)
• Ration card (with photo)

Proof of Address (POA)

• Utility bills (electricity, water, gas, landline — any within last 3 months)
• Bank statement (within 3 months)
• Passport
• Voter ID
• Rent agreement (registered, within 6 months)
• Property tax receipt
• Insurance policy (within 1 year, with address)
• Govt-issued photo ID card with current address

Proof of Date of Birth (DoB)

• Birth certificate
• PAN card
• Passport
• SSC / Class 10 certificate
• Govt pensioner’s photo ID card
• Matriculation certificate

Important: same document cannot be used as both POI and POA at the same time — UIDAI requires separate documents for each proof type.

Update Online — Step-by-Step

Pre-requisite

Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number must be active and with you for the session. If it’s not, you must first update it at an ASK (mobile update is biometric-only).

The process

1. Open https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
2. Click “Login” → enter your 12-digit Aadhaar + captcha + OTP on your mobile
3. Go to “Update Your Aadhaar”
4. Select the data type you want to update: Name, Address, DOB, Gender, Language
5. Enter the new value (in English + local language if both are displayed)
6. Upload the supporting document (scan or photo; under 2 MB, PDF/JPG/PNG)
7. Review the preview of your updated Aadhaar
8. Pay ₹50 fee via UPI / net banking / card
9. Submit → note down your URN (Update Request Number) — you’ll need this for status tracking

Processing

• Processing time: 7-30 days
• SMS update: you’ll receive confirmation when approved or rejected
• Download the updated e-Aadhaar from myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in once approved

Address Update — Using Aadhaar-Based Online Verification

If you don’t have a traditional POA document but have an Aadhaar-linked address-verifying relative (parent, spouse, sibling living at the same address), UIDAI allows “Address Validation Letter” approach:

1. Ask the relative to log in on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
2. They request an “Address Validation Letter” on your behalf
3. A letter with a secret code is posted to the common address
4. You receive the letter → use the secret code to complete your address update online
5. Same ₹50 fee applies

This is especially useful for newly-married women, children moving to hostel, and employees who’ve relocated without a new bill in their own name.

Update at Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK)

Find your nearest ASK

• Open https://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in/aadhaar or uidai.gov.in → “Locate Enrollment Centre”
• Filter by your pincode
• Book an appointment online (recommended — walk-ins face long queues)

At the centre

1. Carry original + photocopy of all supporting documents
2. Biometric verification (fingerprint or iris)
3. Operator updates your data on the UIDAI system live
4. For photo update, a fresh photo is taken
5. Pay fee (₹75-100 depending on update type)
6. Receive Enrollment Slip with URN

Typical processing at ASK

• Demographic updates: same as online (7-30 days)
• Photo/biometric updates: 15-45 days
• Mobile number updates: immediate in most cases

Check Update Status

1. Open https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → “Check Aadhaar Update Status”
2. Enter your URN or Aadhaar number
3. See current stage: – Received → Under Review → Approved (download) or Rejected (with reason)
4. Alternative: SMS UID STATUS to 1947

Download Updated e-Aadhaar

Once approved:

1. Open https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
2. “Download Aadhaar” → enter Aadhaar + captcha + OTP
3. Download the password-protected PDF
4. Password: first 4 letters of your name (CAPS) + year of birth (e.g., RAHU1985)
5. Print on any A4 paper — no laminated card needed. UIDAI has removed the “laminated card” requirement. The black-and-white printout is fully valid.

Aadhaar for Children and Babies

• Blue Aadhaar for children under 5 years — no biometric; uses parent’s biometric as verifier
• Must be updated with the child’s own biometric when they turn 5 and again at 15 — both free updates
• Parents must carry original birth certificate + their own Aadhaar for enrollment

Free vs Paid Updates (UIDAI 2026 policy)
