Enacted in 2005 and rolled out nationally by 2008, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA / NREGA) is the world’s largest rural employment scheme. Any adult in a rural household willing to do unskilled manual labour is legally entitled to up to 100 days of wage work per year. As of 2026, MGNREGA reaches ~7 crore active households per year with a total annual outlay above ₹80,000 crore.

MGNREGA क्या है — The Core Promise

Work Demand Process

This is the single most important step — without a written demand, you’re not entitled to work.

  1. Submit written demand to Gram Panchayat or Panchayat Secretary
  2. Receive dated acknowledgment receipt (keep this safe)
  3. Within 15 days, Panchayat must allocate you work
  4. If no work allocated → unemployment allowance kicks in (1/4 of wage for first 30 days, 1/2 thereafter)

Demand format

“I, [name], Job Card No. [xxx], resident of [village], hereby demand work under MGNREGA from [date] for [n] days.”

You can submit at: – Gram Panchayat office – Rojgar Sevak (Village Employment Worker) – Online via mgnrega.nic.in → “Work Demand” (in pilot states)

Wage Payment — Check Your Money

Wages must reach your bank/post-office account within 15 days of work completion.

How to check

  1. Open https://mgnrega.nic.in“Quick Access” → “Payment Status”
  2. Select state → district → block → panchayat → FY
  3. Search by Job Card number
  4. See: days worked, wage earned, transfer status, payment date

If payment is delayed

  • 16-30 days: Panchayat liable for delay compensation (0.05%/day)
  • Beyond 30 days: escalate to BDO (Block Development Officer)
  • Beyond 60 days: file grievance at nrega.nic.in → “Grievance” tab

Asset Creation for Individual Households

Under Category B of MGNREGA, certain families can get individual-benefit works on their own land:

  • SC/ST households
  • BPL households
  • Women-headed households
  • Persons with disabilities
  • MGNREGA job-card holders who qualify under PMAY, FRA, or Indira Awaas

Examples: – Farm pond on your field (MGNREGA labour free + materials subsidized) – Horticulture plantation (seedlings + labour + maintenance for 3 years) – Goat shed / cattle shedVermicompost pitWell or borewell (in notified water-scarce areas)

Cross-Link with PMAY-G

When constructing a house under PMAY-G, unskilled labour for 90-95 person-days is paid via MGNREGA — no separate application needed. Your Gram Panchayat links the two seamlessly.

Can urban poor apply for MGNREGA?

No. MGNREGA covers rural households only — those outside urban local body limits. Urban wage employment has separate schemes like PM SVANidhi for street vendors.

Are the 100 MGNREGA days per person or per household?

Per household. Multiple adults can split the days; if 3 members work 33 days each, the household has used 99 of its 100-day entitlement.

What if my panchayat refuses to give MGNREGA work?

File a written complaint with the Block Development Officer (BDO), citing your dated work-demand acknowledgment. You are entitled to unemployment allowance if work isn’t provided within 15 days.

Is MGNREGA wage taxable?

No. MGNREGA wages are exempt from income tax, and the annual amount earned typically falls well below any taxable slab.

What is the current MGNREGA wage rate?

It varies by state, ranging from ₹234 to ₹357 per day in FY 2025-26. Rates are revised every April by the Ministry of Rural Development.
