If you are a daily-wage labourer, street vendor, home-based worker, rickshaw puller, construction worker, domestic help, farm labourer, or any other unorganized sector worker, the E-Shram Card is the single most important government document to register for. It opens access to multiple central welfare schemes, gives you automatic insurance coverage, and puts you on the government’s radar for future benefit rollouts — including the proposed unorganized workers pension scheme.

As of 2026, over 30 crore workers have registered. Here’s the complete, up-to-date process.

E-Shram Card क्या है — What You’re Registering For

The E-Shram portal is India’s first-ever national database of unorganized workers. When you register, you receive:

A 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) — yours for life, portable across India
A physical / downloadable E-Shram Card with your UAN
Automatic enrolment in the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) — ₹2 lakh for accidental death, ₹1 lakh for partial permanent disability, at zero premium (Government pays it)
Direct eligibility linkage to ~12 central welfare schemes, including PM-SYM pension, Ayushman Bharat, PMAY, Ujjwala, E-Shram labour card (for state boards), NSAP pension, etc.
Priority consideration for future benefits announced by the Ministry of Labour & Employment

The UAN is separate from the EPFO UAN used by organized-sector workers — don’t confuse the two.

पात्रता — Who Qualifies

You are eligible if

Age between 16 and 59 years
You work in the unorganized sector — meaning your employer does not contribute to EPFO/ESIC on your behalf, and you do not hold a government job
You earn up to approximately ₹15,000 per month (not strictly enforced at registration, but used in exclusion checks)
You have a valid Aadhaar card with active Aadhaar-linked mobile

You are NOT eligible if

You are a member of EPFO or ESIC (salaried in organized sector)
You are a government employee (central, state, PSU)
You are an income-tax payer (file ITR at any slab)
You hold a Jeevan Pramaan Patra under NPS or any contributory pension scheme

If your family has one unorganized worker and one salaried (EPFO-member) worker, the unorganized one can still register independently. E-Shram is personal, not household-based.

CSC Registration (If Your Aadhaar Mobile Doesn’t Work)

Locate your nearest Common Service Centre at https://locator.csccloud.in/
Walk in with your physical Aadhaar
The CSC Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE) will register you using biometric verification — fingerprint or iris scan
Card is printed/given to you on-site
The CSC cannot charge you any fee for E-Shram registration — it is free at both portal and CSC. If charged, report to 14434.

If your fingerprints don’t read (common with manual labour), the VLE can use face authentication as fallback.

Card Download and UAN Lookup

If you’ve lost your card: 1. Open eshram.gov.in → “Already Registered” → “Update / Download UAN Card” 2. Enter your mobile or UAN + OTP 3. Download the PDF and print on any A4 paper

The card has no expiry, but your profile must be updated every year — you can do this yourself anytime. A warning banner appears on your dashboard if your profile is due for update.

PMSBY Insurance Coverage — Automatic

Once your E-Shram registration is complete, you’re auto-enrolled in PMSBY with zero premium (Government of India pays ₹20/year on your behalf).

Coverage: – ₹2 lakh for accidental death or total permanent disability – ₹1 lakh for partial permanent disability (loss of one limb/eye) – Valid for one year from registration, auto-renewed as long as your E-Shram profile is current

To claim: 1. Call 14434 within 30 days of the incident 2. Provide UAN + FIR copy + medical certificate + death certificate (if applicable) 3. Designate your nominee (on E-Shram profile) clearly — this is who the ₹2 lakh goes to

FAQ — Common Questions

Is the E-Shram Card the same as a state Labor Card? No. Many states (UP, Maharashtra, Delhi, etc.) maintain their own Construction Worker Welfare Board cards with separate benefits (education aid, marriage grant, maternity benefit, etc.). E-Shram is a separate central registration that complements — does not replace — your state labour card. Register for both where eligible.

What happens if I get a salaried job (EPFO) later? Your E-Shram card remains valid, but you become ineligible for fresh PMSBY auto-enrolment once you’re an EPFO member. You must update your E-Shram profile to reflect the change.

Can my wife register on my Aadhaar-linked mobile? No. Each person’s Aadhaar must have its own linked mobile. Your wife must have her mobile linked to her own Aadhaar before registering — update at the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Is there any pension benefit through E-Shram? Pension is via PM-SYM (Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan), which is a voluntary scheme you can join through your E-Shram profile. You contribute ₹55 to ₹200 per month (based on age), the Govt matches it, and you receive ₹3,000/month pension after age 60.

How often must I update my E-Shram profile? Annually, on your anniversary of registration. A banner alerts you on login. Missing this doesn’t de-activate the card, but does delay any new scheme benefits auto-linked to your UAN.
